Amanda Thomas, 6th-Grade Science and Literature Teacher
Question: How long have you worked for Lansing USD469?
Answer: This is my 4th year.
Question: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the role you have within the school district?
Answer: I teach 6th grade science and literature. I also coach 7th grade basketball.
Question: What do you enjoy most about your role and the work you do in the school district?
Answer: What I enjoy most is making connections with students and building relationships. I like being able to walk down the hallway and have students from previous years interact with me.
Question: When you're not working, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?
Answer: When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. One of my favorite outdoor activities is to play disc golf. I also enjoy reading.
Question: Could you share a particularly heartwarming or memorable experience you've had while working with students or colleagues?
Answer: At the beginning of my second year teaching, I had a student who expressed how much they disliked science. By the end of the year, that same student told me that science was now their favorite subject because of how fun it is. When I see that student in the hallway or during car rider pick up, they still tell me how much fun they had in my class.
Question: What piece of advice would you like to offer to students to help them succeed and make the most of their educational journey?
Answer: Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are proof you are trying.
