Shalee Eilderts, 2nd-Grade Teacher
Question: How long have you worked for Lansing USD469?
Answer: 7 years
Question: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and the role you have within the school district?
Answer: In my ten years as a teacher, I've taught first grade through fourth grade. I have been loving teaching second grade and being the 2nd grade team leader for the last three years.
Question: What do you enjoy most about your role and the work you do in the school district?
Answer: What I enjoy most about my job is the people, both children and adults. My team is amazing, and we all get along so well together! My students are so fun to be with. I think we learn equally from each other! It is especially exciting to watch them do hands-on projects and see their brains develop right before my eyes!
Question: When you're not working, what hobbies or activities do you enjoy?
Answer: I love to read. Colleen Hoover books were my big kick in 2023, this year I've moved on to Frieda McFadden books. I also enjoy cooking, and traveling.
Question: What is something unusual about you that most people don't know?
Answer: My favorite animal is a manatee. If I was not teaching, I would be a marine biologist!
Question: Could you share a particularly heartwarming or memorable experience you've had while working with students or colleagues?
Answer: One of my favorite things about being a teacher is coming across former students and hearing about how big of an impact I had on them as a teacher. One time I was shadowing in the middle school as part of my master's degree, and I heard my name being screamed across the hall. A group of my former fourth graders were so excited, and running towards me. It was a great feeling, and a wonderful reminder to myself of why I do this job. The kids are our "why".
Question: What piece of advice would you like to offer to students to help them succeed and make the most of their educational journey?
Answer: This is so cliche, but never give up. I've had many students struggle through skills but once it clicks they have something they can be so proud of.
