Update from Lansing High School Students and Graduates Enrolled in KCKCC PCC
Lansing USD 469 is proud to highlight our Lansing High School students and graduates enrolled in Kansas City Kansas Community Center Pioneer Career Center (KCKCC PCC). Below is our weekly update on our Lansing High School student activities at KCKCC:
Culinary:
LHS Graduate Emalee Litewski made a variety of icebox cookies. These cookies gained popularity in the 20th century when refrigerators became common in households and "icebox" referred to ice-cooled refrigerators. Placing the dough in the refrigerator to chill is why they are called "icebox" cookies.
Emalee Litewski made cranberry pistachio and chocolate almond biscotti. Biscotti is an Italian biscuit. The biscuit is twice-baked, oblong-shaped, dry, crunchy and usually dipped in a drink.
LHS and KCKCC Food II student John Groefsema made marinades and a rub for the KC strip steaks they cut from the beef short loin from Bichelmeyer Meats. Each student grilled a steak to perfection, medium rare, while learning how to get grill marks on both sides and adding the finishing touch, the compound butter they made.
CNA:
Donning and Doffing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
LHS student Diasia Joe practiced donning, which means putting on and using PPE properly. Doffing means removing PPE in a way that avoids self-contamination. The proper use of gloves, gowns and masks protects and minimizes the risk of exposure.
Construction:
Cabinet Making
Lansing High School Construction students Langston Toedter and Jeramia Burnett are starting cabinet making. Students began cutting plywood into side panels, and shelves and ripped the remaining strips that will be cut to length. Students applied veneer strips to the edges and started drilling pocket holes.
HVAC:
HVAC student and LHS graduate Aaron Charity worked on the components of an industrial commercial motor. The students learned the wiring components to activate the motors that can be used on conveyors or industrial appliances.
