Mrs. Silva Inspiring a Love for Reading at LIS Through Reading Chain
In November 2023, Lansing Intermediate School Library Technician Mrs. Silva introduced an innovative "The Reading Chain" project to our fourth and fifth-grade students. The premise was simple: for every book read, students would sign a link with the book's title and author and add it to a growing chain that was displayed in the library. Initially aiming for 200 books by May, the response was overwhelming. Within just three weeks, the goal was surpassed, igniting an enthusiasm for reading within the school.
With the initial goal achieved in record time, the students pushed the boundaries further and set their sights on a new target: to see if they could make the chain encircle the entire library. By November 2023, the chain had already surpassed 700 links and continued to grow each day. By February, the chain had grown to 1054 links.
We are thrilled to announce that, thanks to the collective effort and passion for reading from the students and Mrs. Silva, the goal was achieved by April with a whopping 1,300 links! The chain now winds its way around every corner, symbolizing this remarkable achievement.
"My favorite saying I say to the students is "Step outside your reading box," said Mrs. Silva. "You will never know what you like to read if you don't try a different kind of book."
We are incredibly proud of our students who contributed and of Mrs. Silva, who started the initiative! It's a great day to be a Lion!
